StarCraft II Q&A – Batch 39

The latest question and answer series focuses on the Starcraft II Map Editor. The mod community is in for a treat, we’ve all seen what great custom games can be produced from the Warcraft III Map Editor, the most successful mod being DOTA (Defense of the Ancients) which has brought me countless hours of fun. Check out the Q&A with Brett Wood, Map Editor Designer, below are the questions I found most interesting.

5) Do you plan to take ideas from third party programs and update the editor frequently to meet the demands of the map making community?

Absolutely. We are very much committed to supporting the map/mod community as much as possible, and well be keeping an eye on the forums and updating the editor as often as we can to incorporate new suggestions.

9) Is the new StarCraftII map editor able to make our own 4th race by combining 3 races different looking and ability etc. together? even more combining with some new units from the editor? (battle.net) -cS)beta

Yes, custom races are fully supported, including the ability to choose them from the game lobby while playing melee maps, as long as the mod defining the race is loaded.

From the answer on question 5, it sounds like Blizzard is making all the right moves, it’s no secret, mods are great at extending the longevity of games that would have otherwise fallen out of popularity at a much earlier time.

Take for example the Half-Life series, although the games themselves were excellent, the mod Counter-Strike was a smash hit which led to even more sales of Half-Life and grew the community even larger. Even to this day, Counter-Strike remains popular, which really shows just how much value mods can add to games.
