It’s nice to see more racing games make their way to the iPhone, the caveman and furry animal racers have been fun, but sometimes I feel like trading in my log-on-wheels for a nice sports car. GTS World Racing is all about the accelerometer, there is no touch screen involved in the gameplay.
The controls are quite interesting, before we dive in lets look at how the previous two racers handle steering. In Crash Bandicoot your kart is always going at max speed and you have no control over acceleration. Cro-Mag Rally on the other hand takes the opposite approach, you have full control over acceleration and you can even reverse your kart through the touch screen controls. Both games previously mentioned utilize the touch screen to some extent which does make it slightly more difficult to steer.
GTS manages to control both steering and acceleration/brakes all through the accelerometer. Steering as you would expect is controlled by turning the iPhone clock-wise or counter-clock-wise, the key difference here is how the game handles acceleration/brakes, to accelerate the car simply lean the iphone forward and to use your breaks simply lean your iphone towards you. I was delighted by great controls, I’d love to see more racing games in the future implement this control scheme.
Features:
- 64 tracks
- 16 worldwide locations
- 3 car types
- 4 difficulty levels
- 4 play modes - Single Race, Challenge Cup, Grand Tour, Championship
GTS World Racing is available in the App Store for $7.99

Plain to see this person who shot the video didn’t know the course very well.
Although the controls are OK, I’d still prefer on-screen controls. I don’t think I’d care much for tilting the device back and forth and side to side. I’m really too used to hand controllers after hundreds of hours of Gran Turismo on the PS2 and about a hundred or so of Need For Speed on the PSP.
I don’t expect the iPhone to compare to dedicated game machines, but I think using accelerometers to control cars is rather tiring. I’d be willing to bet developers could figure a way to have an analog control spot on the screen (similar to the little sliding button the PSP uses) that is controlled by either the left or right thumb. I find all that tilting rather disorienting since I’ve always been used to racing on a display that doesn’t move.
Still I’d like to give the developer of this game a big hand for bringing some nice looking racing vehicles to the iPhone and iPod Touch platform.
