Everyone’s favorite puzzle game, Tris will soon be no more, so grab this gem while you can. Apple was contacted by The Tetris Company and asked to have the app Tris taken down claiming copyright infringement.
“Well — I’ve received notice from Apple that they’ve been contacted by The Tetris® Company about Tris. That, I’m afraid, is essentially game over. Do they have a case? No. Not really. I am convinced that if it went to court, the “copyright” claim would get thrown out completely. The trademark, perhaps not — but if I changed the name, to e.g. “Trys”, that would be much harder for them to argue.” - stated Noah Witherspoon, developer of Tris.
The Facebook application Scrabulous went through a similar situation with Scrabble, the interesting thing about game copyrights is you can only copyright the name of the game and how your game looks, Scrabulous simply changed it’s name to Wordscraper, changed the color of the pieces, and went from square to circle pieces, and presto they were back in business.
It’s understandable for Witherspoon to avoid the whole copyright issue, it could be expensive as well as time consuming, not exactly what a college student needs.
