Funky Punch is a fighting game made by Solus Games, which arrived in the App Store on August 25, 2008. The game features an assorted array of 12 unique characters, 4 of those characters are actually emoticons, it sort of messes with your head when you get punched repeatedly by a happy emoticon, it just feels so wrong.

The gameplay mechanics are quite deep for a handheld fighting game. Besides the normal movements of going towards or away from your opponent the game also includes side step movements, allowing players to dodge projectile attacks or rushing opponents. The game has only one combo per character, but due to the nature of digital distribution, I wouldn’t be surprised if Solus Games continued to add more content and combos to characters through updates, other games such as Enigmo have already added more content by this method.

Characters have all the basic fighting moves you would expect, jumping, jump kick, sweep kick, guard breaker, evade and ground roll. Each character has their own set of power moves, 2 specials and 1 super. The yellow bar indicates how much power a character has to perform special or super moves, you can quickly recharge the bar by dancing, no I’m not kidding, you dance to get more power. Now of course you want to time your little dance sessions while the opponent is downed.

The game also provides a mode for training, helping new players learn the ropes in a short period of time. Players can get step by step instructions on how to perform moves in training mode, or they can fight unlimited rounds with the same opponent to test their skills in practice mode.

The controls can be a bit challenging, it is a virtual gamepad after all and the main weakness of this is the lack of tactile feedback. At first you’ll probably be looking at the gamepad controls to make sure you are hitting the right buttons, but as you play the game longer you start to get use to the positions of the gamepad controls. I had my co-worker, who’s a huge fighting game fanatic, try a few rounds of Funky Punch so I could get his opinions on the game. He ended up completing the whole game during his lunch break, he was totally engulfed in the game and no one could talk to him. From what I could tell, he seemed to really enjoy the game. What I found most intriguing was the fact that he had no issues with the controls.
Overall the game provides great quality in terms of visuals, sound and gameplay. It’s not lacking in any of those apartments, it’s a very well rounded game. There is one important feature that is missing, multiplayer mode. Fighting computers is great for maybe a few hours, but with the addition of multiplayer mode that could provide hundreds of hours of entertainment value, that single feature alone could take this game from great to excellent.
Funky Punch is now available in the App Store for $7.99.
