X-Plane first true Flight Simulator for the iPhone
X-Plane by Laminar Research was released on September 11. Flight sim enthusiast will surely be in for a treat, the game is geared towards providing the most realistic flying experience. Below the developer describes how this level of realism is achieved.
“X-Plane reads in the geometric shape of any aircraft and then figures out how that aircraft will fly. It does this by an engineering process called ‘blade element theory’, which involves breaking the aircraft down into many small elements and then finding the forces on each little element many times per second. These forces are then converted into accelerations which are then integrated to velocities and positions.”
The bad news is I have no clue what he just said, the good news is we don’t have to understand any of that to enjoy the game.
Just like real pilots, players will have to deal with the unpredictable nature of weather, the game allows you to challenge yourself by adjusting flying conditions such as time of day, weather, sky conditions, wind and turbulence.
I haven’t had much time with X-Plane, but from what I’ve seen so far I’ve been impressed, the game looks promising, hopefully we’ll see more planes added in future updates, currently the game has 4 planes to choose from.
X-Plane by Laminar Research is available in the App Store for $9.99.
