Star Wars The Force Unleashed Review

Star Wars The Force Unleashed (TFU) was one of the most anticipated games to hit the App Store, but does the game live up to the hype?

In TFU players take on the role of Starkiller, Darth Vader’s secret apprentice, tasked with the mission to exterminate the remaining Jedi.

The game play and controls were to say the least, unconventional. Rather than using tilt or touchscreen buttons, TFU relies on touchscreen gestures to perform Force moves. Although this may seem gimmicky in any other game, it actually fits perfectly in the Star Wars universe, performing Force moves feels intuitive and fun.

Players can’t control Starkiller’s movement, only his Force moves and lightsaber to deflect incoming fire. The good news is there is a lot of Force moves available to the player such as, Grip, Push, Pull, Speed and Lightning, the bad news is the game is only 6 chapters so you don’t get much time to enjoy them.

The game does try to add more replay value with survival mode, where you fight endless waves of enemies to see how long you can last.

Normal mode seems much too easy, if you do plan to purchase TFU do yourself a favor and start with hard mode, you’ll at least get a decent amount of challenge.

The graphics looked fairly good, the music on the other hand was in midi and we all know how good that sounds…

Overall the game felt a bit repetitive, the enemies weren’t that diverse, just lots of storm troopers rushing at you waiting to get strangled by your Force Grip. The boss fights could have used a bit more polish, each boss had one pattern, once you figured it out the challenge was over. In other games like Megaman for example, bosses have different phases, once you get them down to low health their fighting patterns change making the game more difficult to beat.

I was really looking forward to playing TFU, after actually playing it I feel let down, the game definitely didn’t live up to the hype. Don’t get me wrong the game isn’t horrible, it’s just not worth the $10 price tag, hopefully they drop the price in the future to better match how much play time the game actually offers.
