In Galcon your main objective is to take over all enemy planets, this is achieved by sending swarms of ships to take over enemy planets. All planets owned by players produce ships, the larger the planet the higher rate of ship production.
The controls are all touch screen based, which makes controlling your fleet of ships fast and easy. To attack just tap on your planet and then tap on an enemy planet. To send reinforcements to an allied planet under attack, just perform a gesture from one allied planet to the one being attacked. If you want to select all your planets, double tap on one of your planets.
Galcon’s looks can be deceiving, the game appears simple, yet its gameplay is complex. There are numerous factors to consider before each move.
In a typical online match there will be four players including yourself, all players start with one planet. The first action most high ranking players will perform is a quick scan of the map, looking at how the planets are positioned, how much defenses each planet has, gauging which players pose the greatest threat based on how accessible neutral planets are to them.
That’s just the start of the match, as you would imagine a four way free-for-all can be challenging even for the best players due to the unpredictable nature of people, you never know when you will be double or triple teamed.
Galcon isn’t like a game of chess where all players have an equal chance of winning, due to asymmetrical planet configuration on maps, one player will always be in a stronger starting position than the others and the possibility of being double/triple teamed is always there. So don’t fret if you lose, once in a while you’ll find yourself in a situation where victory isn’t possible.
Overall I found Galcon to be an excellent RTS game for the iPhone, because the game has a simple appearance making it more approachable for casual gamers, yet it has the strategic depth to keep hardcore players coming back for more.
