Classic board game ‘Monopoly’ now available on the iPhone

The classic board game Monopoly ($7.99) is now available for the iPhone and iPod touch.

What better time to enjoy a financial game such as Monopoly than during a recession, if we can’t be rich in real life, why not get rich in the magical world of Monopoly, where sumo wrestlers run like track stars and windmills fly like helicopters.

The environment is 3D, so you get a nice view of the board and close ups when pieces are moved. There are five environments to play in washitsu (Japanese-style room), pub, patio, log cabin and a room with a British look to it.

The game offers a choice of 7 pieces, the car survived the cut, I wish I could say the same for the shoe, such a shame, one of my favorite Monopoly pieces.

To roll your dice, just shake your iPhone, the rest of the controls are touchscreen based. There is a group of buttons located at the bottom of the screen for dice roll/end turn, trade, manage properties and pause.

At the top is a helpful pull-down menu that recaps the last five game events. At the corners you will find the player pieces, their color and how much money they have. Once players purchase a property, a rectangle of their color is placed below the property to help players keep track of who owns what.

The game only offers multiplayer over local WiFi, strangely though, Monopoly features in-game chat. How useful can that feature be if everyone is in the same room, yea…

The AI certainly does seem to cheat a bit on dice rolls. Very often it narrowly misses or avoids landing on very costly spaces. I’ve played a game where and entire side and the next half around the corner were owned by me with hotels and for about 6 or 7 full runs around the board it never landed on one of them.

Everyone wants the classic version. No one wants to be reminded that our economy is going to hell with properties that cost a million dollars. Also, many comments on iTunes say your AI cheats when rolling the dice.
