Square Enix releases ‘Crystal Defenders’ for the iPhone

Square Enix has released a fantasy tower defense game, Crystal Defenders ($7.99), for the iPhone and iPod touch.
Crystal Defenders has a good assortment of defenders to deal with the inevitable horde rush, rather than building structures like other TD games, in this one you place defenders such as Black Mages and Soldiers to fight off your enemies.
The game offers a good amount of strategical depth with over 300 stages to test your mettle.
Although the game does have good gameplay, the lack of intuitive controls really hurts the game. The screen is split in half, where the upper shows the map and the lower is a virtual directional pad. The game looks like a straight port from the DS to the iPhone with no care taken to customize the controls for the iPhone. With a large touchscreen virtual D-Pads are unnecessary for TD style games.
It’s really a shame, the game could have been something special, I’d definitely recommend playing Crystal Defenders Lite (Free) before purchasing the full version.
