Not another match-3 puzzle game, I know, I know, I promise Puzzle Quest is different. First published on the DS and PSP in early 2007, the game was an unexpected smash hit, due to its great popularity it was subsequently ported to Xbox Live Arcade, Wii and PC, where it continued to receive rave reviews.

Puzzle Quest combines role-playing, strategy and puzzle elements to provide a fun and unique gaming experience. You start your journey as a low level character with basic attributes such as combat, morale and magic. There are main quest that will advance the plot and also additional side quest to gain extra gold, items and experience.

The combat portion of Puzzle Quest is where the game differs from other role-playing games, battles are waged over a grid of tiles. The puzzle portion of the game is turn-based and plays a lot like Bejeweled. Matching three tiles in a row or column will cause them to vanish from the grid and the remaining puzzle pieces will drop down to fill the gap.

Each of the tiles have their own unique properties, matching three of a colored tile (red/fire, yellow/air, green/earth, blue/water) will give you additional mana of that color. Purple Stars give experience, Gold tiles give gold (shocking!), Skull tiles do direct damage to your opponent and Wildcards act as multipliers.

TransGaming will be releasing Puzzle Quest ($9.99) in episodic fashion, rather than releasing the game as a whole. This may not be a bad thing, since the game will be more affordable, and players will have a choice if they want additional content or not when the next episode comes out.
