Metal Gear Solid Touch: Surprisingly Fun
Metal Gear Solid Touch ($7.99) has finally arrived in the App Store, playable on the iPhone and iPod touch.
MGS Touch isn’t what many MGS fans would expect, there is very little use of stealth in this title. In MGS Touch you play as Snake. In each mission you’ll remain stationary, usually behind some form of cover, where you can safely fire back at enemies.
The controls are well thought out and easy to use. I was worried that a touchscreen shooter wouldn’t provide enough challenge for players, and the issue of fingers obscuring the screen.
In MGS Touch rather than tapping directly on the targets, you guide the crosshair onto them, using touchscreen gestures. Place your finger any where on the screen, while keeping contact, move your finger and the crosshair will move relative to your finger’s position.
You can also use multi-touch gestures such as pinch to switch to the sniper rifle for those long range targets, and keep in mind headshots do extra damage.
I’m very happy with the control scheme, because it makes it challenging for the player to hit targets, rather than simply tapping on them and at the same time it resolves the issue of fingers obscuring the enemies.
I was surprised by how much fun I had playing MGS Touch. From all previews of the game it didn’t seem like MGS Touch would amount to much, but you never know until you try it for yourself.
