‘Doom Resurrection’ for iPhone to be an On-Rails Shooter

John Carmack has finally let the cat out of the bag, the next big iPhone title from id Software will be Doom Resurrection, which looks a lot like Doom 3.

The gameplay is vastly different from how current shooters play on the iPhone. Take away free-look and add rails, and that pretty much sums up the control scheme for Doom Resurrection. Now it may sound a bit odd at first, but it does make a lot of sense after I gave it some more thought.

I recall as a child I loved playing shooting games like Area 51 at arcades, that’s how I envision Doom Resurrection. The game will handle all the movement for you while you focus on the fun part, shooting stuff. From what I understand players will use tilt controls to guide the crosshair onto targets.

Now you may be asking yourself, why not use the touchscreen instead, tapping on  targets seems a lot more intuitive. Yes, it’s more intuitive, maybe too intuitive for its own good. If Doom Resurrection were to use the touchscreen for aiming the game would become  a cake walk, killing enemies by simply tapping on them, essentially an over glorified whac-a-mole game.

Another high profile iPhone shooter, Metal Gear Solid Touch, has already avoided the whac-a-mole trap by only allowing players to use the touchscreen to guide the crosshair onto the target, as opposed to simply tapping on them.

If I had it my way, I’d prefer Doom Resurrection use the same control scheme as Metal Gear Solid Touch and use the tilt controls for dodging instead of aiming.

Doom Resurrection is slated for release in about a month from now, I don’t know about you guys, but I can’t wait for this release!
