What I like about Apple's design is the position of the battery, it's actually located where it's exposed to the least amount of heat, right under the palm rest (the right side to be exact). Now not all laptops are designed this well. Some of them have the CPU/GPU positioned close to the battery. You can always check by touching where your battery is, if it's extremely hot you may want to consider using the laptop with the battery pulled out, especially if it's your desktop replacement. @zaphod

I work on it all day, and at night it's always either downloading/uploading, or processing huge amounts of data. Taking the battery out to preserve it's life scares me a little, especially since the mag safe connectors come off so easily! too easy to crash the machine by yanking the power!!
