Impressive Space Shooter Shadows of Lylat Headed for Mac
Star Fox 2 never saw the light of day, despite the Japanese version of the game being nearly complete, but was canceled due to the imminent release of Nintendo 64. SOL Team, a group of dedicated fans with no affiliation with Nintendo, has been hard at work for the last 6 years producing Star Fox‘s spiritual successor, Shadows of Lylat. Developed with FreeSpace Open, a multi-platform engine, the game will be available on Mac, Linux and Windows.
The game takes place between Star Fox 64 and Star Fox Adventures. Gameplay wise Shadows of Lylat aims to ascend beyond the basic arcade shooter into a full fledged simulation shooter. The game will include multiplayer for added replay value, described by SOL Team simply as “massive”, which evokes images of epic space battles on the scale of Star Wars. The game also promises to deliver a wide variety of aircraft, weapons and enemies.
There is no set release date for Shadows of Lylat at this time. SOL Team is actively looking for talented texture, effect, and concept artists. If you think you got the chops and don’t mind working for free, head on over to SOL Team’s website.
