Unreal Engine 3 Running on iPod touch and iPhone 3GS
Unreal Engine 3 running on an iPod touch? I’d have to see it to believe it… Looks up, ok I believe it!
Anand Lal Shimpi of Anandtech had the chance to play with an Unreal Engine 3 tech demo running on a third generation iPod touch, the tech demo is also capable of running on the iPhone 3GS. There’s one catch though, Unreal Engine 3 requires OpenGL ES 2.0, meaning older generations of iPhones and iPod touches won’t be capable of running the engine.
Anand played through a modified Unreal Tournament level against a single bot. The controls are similar to Modern Combat: Sandstorm, D-pad at the lower left and a fire button at the lower right. For free look controls, the game tracks touchscreen swipes.
The graphics shown in the tech demo screenshots were pretty good by mobile standards and the Unreal Engine ran surprisingly smooth on the iPod touch as illustrated by the gameplay video.
But don’t get too excited just yet, we won’t be seeing any titles from Epic Games appear in the App Store anytime soon, this was simply a tech demo to showcase Unreal Engine 3’s ability to run on mobile platforms. Mark Rein, Vice President of Epic Games, stated they will make Unreal Engine 3 available to licensees in the near future.
