Beginner’s Guide to Words With Friends

New to Words With Friends? No problem! You’ve come to the right place. Words With Friends is a lot like Scrabble but way better, because you can play with your friends online, meaning you could even play from the comfort of your toilet seat, how’s that for a selling point, baazing!
But before you can play any game you need to know the rules, so let’s get to it.
Tile Placement
The first word of every game has to have at least one tile placed on the star square. Each new word formed must share at least one tile of a pre-existing word. Words can be formed horizontally (left to right) and vertically (top to bottom).
Scoring
Each letter has a set value, so for example D is worth two points, O is one point and G is three points. If you were to spell the word DOG you would earn a total of six points. There are also blank tiles, although they carry no point value they can become any letter you wish, making them very useful for completing words that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise.
There are also premium squares spread across the board — DL=Double Letter, TL=Triple Letter, DW=Double Word and TW=Triple Word.
Premium squares are highly sought after, they have the potential to multiply your score greatly. For example if you were to play the word AX, A is worth one point and X is 8 points, you’d only score a total of 9 points. But if the X was placed on the TL square, that would increase the value of X from 8 to 24 points, bringing you to the new total of 25 points.
If you use all 7 tiles in one turn you earn an extra 35 bonus points, this is called a bingo. Scoring bingos can adversely affect your opponent causing them to yell multiple CW=Cuss Words (not a premium square).
The game ends once a player has used up all their tiles, whatever tiles a player still possesses when the game ends will count against them and be awarded to the opposing player. For example, if your opponent beat you to the punch and played their last tiles before you could play your remaining tiles C, A and T — C being worth four points, A one point and T one point — you would subtract six points from your total score and add six points to your opponent’s score.
The game can also end if three turns have passed with no points scored.
Now that we have the basic rules out of the way, let’s dive into some basic strategies and tactics.

Strategy
There are many ways to play Words With Friends from a strategy stand point. Some players prefer a more aggressive approach, forming long words on each turn, to get rid of tiles as fast as possible. Keep in mind that 90 tiles are shared between both players, so the more tiles you use, the less there are for the opponent. Although it can be risky at times, branching out with long words gives your opponent ample opportunities to place tiles on premium squares.
The second approach I’d like to talk about is a more conservative style of play. It’s more defensive I’d say. With this approach you’ll form both short and long words, which of the two you’ll form on a given turn depends on a few factors, the biggest one being premium square proximity.
If you can form a long word to reach a premium square then go for it, otherwise, focus on forming short words. Make sure any word you form doesn’t extend so far that it allows your opponent to branch off your word to reach a premium square. Keep forming short words (especially parallel words, more on this later) until your opponent is forced to branch out putting you within striking distance of a premium square.
Obviously not all premium squares are of equal value, so you’ll have to use your best judgement on whether you want to avoid branching out to a certain premium square or if you’re willing to take the risk.
Tactics
Use Consonants to Minimize Risk – There are ways to minimize risk when forming long words. You’ll want to avoid placing vowels next to premium squares such as DL and TL. Placing vowels next to premium squares creates an easy setup for the opponent, since power tiles such as X naturally come before or after a vowel in many words. So just remember if possible form words with consonants next to the premium squares to minimize risk.

Avoid placing vowels next to premium squares.
Rack Management – Keeping a good balance of vowels and consonants on your rack is important. Having all vowels or consonants can make it difficult to form long words. If you do find yourself with too many of either kind, try using your opponent’s tiles to your advantage. Say for example you have all consonants, just look around the board for any vowels you can place two or more consonants next to. Or you could use the swap option to get rid of some consonants, this option forfeits your turn, use this option sparingly.
Be a Hooker – Hooking is when you add letters to the beginning or end of a word to form a new word. Hooks can be very potent, a well placed hook can really boost your score. Check out the screenshot below for example. I used the S to hook onto the word SINE to form the new word SINES, so far I’m at 6 points, then the new word I formed horizontally SLOGS is worth 36 points, since the L (2 points) was on the TL square and the S landed on the TW square, bringing me to the total of 42 points. In that example the word I hooked onto didn’t give that many extra points, but if you do see your opponent form a word containing lots of power tiles — such as K, J, Q, Z, and X — that would be the ideal time to become a hooker.

Counting Cards errr… Tiles – Now it may seem a bit extreme to keep track of what tiles have been played, but it’s actually very useful, I’ll give an example to illustrate why. If you were trying to reach the premium square TW by first spelling the word DOG vertically and then spelling the word SEA horizontally, where the S connects with DOG to form DOGS. In order for this tactic to work, you need to be sure that the opponent has no blank or S tiles to connect with the word DOG, making it impossible for them to use the TW tile against you. Letter distribution can be found at the end of the guide.
Bingo Stems – As the author of this guide, you may think I score bingos quite frequently, I assure you I do not. That actually makes me unqualified to write this next tip. But if you’re a big believer in the blind leading the blind, please by all means continue reading.
Bingo Stems are a group of six letters that give you the highest probability of forming a seven letter word. Try memorizing these bingo stems to improve your odds of scoring a bingo — TISANE, SATIRE and RETINA.
Parallel Words – I recommend memorizing as many two and three letter words as possible (word list at end of guide), this will allow you to form multiple words in a single turn. In the screenshot below we see the player form three words by placing them parallel to each other — PEE, PE and EL.

Have Fun
At the end of the day playing Words With Friends should be a fun experience, so don’t take the game too seriously. If you’re new, you’ll lose a lot, but don’t let it get to you, just hit the re-match button, form a word, then type in the chat box BRING IT! That’s usually how most of my games go, especially with my arch-rival Jenn K. Lee of Pocketables.net *Shakes Fist*. I hope you found this guide to be helpful, thank you for reading, and if you have any questions feel free to leave a comment.

Question when playing pass and play. When the last tile is placed, even though the opponent has a higher score, the win goes to the person who placed the last tile. Why?
What happens if an opponent doesn’t play again…It’s her turn and it’s been nearly 2 days. At what point does it forfiet?
I have games that have been untouched for 16, 15 and 14 days. It’s so annoying to see them there. What happened to auto resign?!
I was ahead and had three tiles to play. My wife went out and after the calculations we each had 405 points but I was listed as the winner. How is the winner determined in that situation.
Ok, my latest problem that just started this morning: I keep getting the “updating” message that stays on for about 30 second and then it closes my application. When I restart the app, the same thing happens – Updating and then close. I can”t do anything with the game.
They are having major problems this morning!!! Must be the weekend! My favorite time to play. It updated a little while ago and I had lost half my games and some old ones came back. Then it did an “oops” screen and they all went away again. Hopefully they will get it corrected soon.
Is wwf now limiting the number of active games? In the past, I’ve had 11 or 12 games going at one time. Now with 8 games active, wwf won’t allow me to start a new game. I can accept additional games but not initiate anew game.
I have been playing Pass and Play and although I have the higher score after all is said and done, the other player that has played all their tiles is listed as the winner. Is that just specific to the Pass and Play?
thriteen games going and only five active as usual… why, oh, why can’t both players have the option to resign?! puh-leez!!!
Same here. I totally agree that there should be a way to delete games in progress that have been abandoned.
How do I clear games that I have finished off the main menu screen??? And PS in my humble opinion Tidbit is a word. Its on lots of pineapple cans in the supermarket!!! Is there a way to submit words we think should be added?
I had something strange happen. I’d just started a random game and my turn was first. I played a word and the word was accepted and I got my score. Then my opponents eyeballs flashed off and on a couple of times and then my word disapeared. Poof-gone. Then we both got negative scores… Like -137 for me and -224 for my opponent and 0 tiles remaining. What the heck? I left the game and next time I went back in their name was gone but the open game has been there for 11 days. And sometimes I see their eyes on the game. I would resign but it is not my turn and it won’t allow me. This happen to anybody else?
ok… a few of the glitches have been resolved – well, sort of. Now I still have many games that just seem to have been abandoned. I beg of you all… puh-leez… if your game isn’t stuck somehow and you’ve merely given up… puh-leez… resign!!!
I was starting a game and as I was adding my last tile to the board, the tile got large and nothing happened. I restarted the game and it said…updating….never changed. I rebooted my phone…same. I uninstalled the program and reinstalled…same thing. When I try to start…it says “updating” and then returns to my home screen.
Just wait a couple of days without continuing to reinstall it. Then after reinstall it. It will go back to the screen that says oops where it is was alwyas stcuck at and then it finally goes through and it puts you right back where you left off at, My phone did a couple of weeks ago.
Recently played a game where I lead throughout. We were close to the end. I had four tiles left, easily playable. All the high value tiles had been played, and I would have won the game easily. However, my opponent played a tile, and the game announced her as the winner without ever letting me play my remaining tiles. Needless, to say, that was extremely frustrating!! Any idea why that would happen?
Could it be that your opponent merely had one tile left to play? If so, your opponent would have gotten the total value of your remaining tiles, and that same total would have been deducted from your score.
Aahh, that’s what happened. I just went back and officially read ALL the rules and saw that that’s exactly what happened. Thanks for the feedback.
They played their last tile.
After subtracting the total of your tiles, the computer determined that your opponent had won.
Just a guess
hey ~ thanks for one terrific scrabble game. I play with both my grown boys, constant
and ongoing. I’d love a score feature (statistics?), so I don’t have to scrolls back through the YOU BEAT or JT BEAT YOU. Am I missing a feature?
Under their move it says 1 hour ago even if it was just a minute ago.
Is there a Words With Friends version that can be played on the Blackberry? If not is there a facebook interface that it could be played off that website?
Or is it just straight up Mac based and not available to us PC format peeps?
My husband has an iphone … I like the words with friends app. I’d like to be playing it myself on my Blackberry.
HELP!
How do you access the dictionary from WWF? I have accidentally done it twice, but don’t know how I did it. Thank you for your insight and advice. This is a lot better than Newtoy’s directions!
Oh my, I had no idea they added a dictionary to WWF, if anyone knows how to access it we would all appreciate it!
When I am finished playing letters and hit play and submit, it will be in the sending mode with the spinning wheel for up to 15 minutes. The time varies. This is both on my iPhone and my wife’s. I try to hit games to play someone else, but the page is locked up until it is sent. Pretty frustrating when you are playing multiple other people.
This is a server side issue. Basically there is so many people trying to play the game at the same time, the server gets overwhelmed and slows to a crawl. You’ll notice this happens around peak times, usually in the evenings it happens most often.
Newtoy is aware of this problem and is actively working to improve the performance of the servers to handle all the new players.
I am playinng a random opponent and they have a red “!” on their tile….instead of a letter- like mine would be “C”….is this normal? I just worry about hackers and stuff.
Thanks!
I’ve had one like that, too, and I think they used an app to make a “special” tile. The one I had used the icons I know are in the Emoji Free app.
Awesome tutorial. In the 3 letter words you’re missing “QIS”.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention Chris, the word QIS has been added to the 3 letter word list.
I am getting the message ‘Updating……….this may take a few minutes. Its been days! I’ve tried to delete game and reinstall but it still appears. I’ve tried hard resetting the phone and it still appears. Any fixes?
I have the same message (“Updating…This may take a few minutes.) It been there for weeks. I’ve deleted and reinstalled. I also submitted a ticket on NewToy’s support page, but have gotten no answer in almost a month! I did reinstall and log in with a different email (meaning I lost all the other games I had going). This worked until the same thing happened again. I’m running out of email addys to use. I even paid for the ad-free version and it still has the message. Really annoying, especially when their Tech Support seems to be MIA.
My former screen names are ECSescilla and GypsyHorseLover if anyone is wondering why I haven’t made a move in forever. Sorry!!!

I have downloaded and deleted Words with friends various times. I start games with people but I can’t play… I mean I can’t even pick up a letter. The other game I have started it’s my turn but everytime I open the game Word crashes…. what the hell….
Has anyone figured out what the red square with the cross through it means?
Why do they not have a site to play this game from a desk top, or a laptop??
it means you lost your connection to the games server. this results in a forfeit. sometimes this happens before the game even starts.
I’ve got a weird icon on a game that finished by itself?. I’d placed my last word a couple hours before and when I went back to see if my opponent had replied the game had finished saying he’d beat me and there is a red icon with a slashed circle in the middle. Can anyone tell me what this means? I was ahead and we each had a full rack of tiles and plenty of space to continue.
Thanks,
Sarf
Yes! This is exactly what happened to me too! Any ideas??
it means you lost the connection and resigned automatically. this sucks, but it happens occasionally
due to the many recent glitches, I had to abandon my account and create a new one. AND… along with that, of course, I had to abandon many games as well. if you happened to be an opponent of mine… I am truly sorry. if you still have to opportunity to resign, please do so. Previously jennephik and now, jjennephikk.
I tried to go to Account Settings and change my user name. I keep getting a message that the change was rejected and possibly because I am trying to change something I don’t have access to. Are we not able to change our user name or is this a temporary glitch?
Anyone know why the red “no” symbol appears on the bar that says my opponent won? I wanted to go see the board but it won’t let me. What gives?
“updating…this may take a few minutes”
This message appeared on my screen last PM while playing interrupting an intense seven person around the world game. Turned off iphone, went to bed. STILL there this AM. HELP?!?!!!
Please advise. New enthusiast
Sleeperman
What do the eyeballs on the top right corner mean? Thanks!
It indicates that the other player is viewing the board at that moment. But there is some delay from the time the eyes appear and disappear. So even if you see the eyes it doesn’t necessarily mean they are viewing the board at that very instant.
aaahhh!!! Help! I am a total addict but I installed the upgrade and now I cannot get WWF to work at all. Can’t log in – tells me my password is incorrect. Tried to click in link to reset password – keeps telling me it’s sending me a link to my email to reset it but I receive no email. I have uninstalled and reinstalled. Restarted phone. NOTHING works!
Me too! I’ve redownloaded it many times and nothing works! Anyone know a fix?
I am also having this problem!! I have 20 open games and can’t get into my games! It’s very frustrating.
I also am having the same problem. Reinstalled the game and now can no longer log into the game. Have e-mailed NewToy, but have not heard anything. When I login with my e-mail address, it tells me Oops! the login failed and and asks if I mistyped my password. It doesn’t give me a place to put my password, just the e-mail address which it won’t accept. Help!!!
I just tried to login again. There is now a message at the top saying they are currently experiencing technical difficulties and will have it fixed in a few hours. Hopefully we will soon be able to resume play!!
Just went to the newtoy support page. It seems to be a problem for a lot of people right now. It tells you not to reinstall (oops, a little late for that) but that they are working on fixing it. Hope it’s soon! I’m going crazy!
I have an odd thing happening with this great game. My bottom row of letter (7) expands to 11 or more as those extras are under the letter tray as they are moved onto the game board. The “underwear letters” cannot be moved but it is very confusing when I have letters out trying to find homes and there are more letters filling their spots on the row of tiles. Hard to know what is real and useable. Any suggestions? It doesn’t happen every game.
Thanks for your help and you write better than you think.
That’s very strange Carolyn, that’s the first time I’ve heard of that issue. I think it would be best to delete WWF and re-install it. Make sure you keep track of your account info, the Username/Email and Password, you used to register WWF, that info can be found under “Account Settings” located at the end of the Your Move list.
Keeping this account info will allow you to continue your games where you left off after you re-install, assuming you input the same Username/Email and Password.
Let me know how it goes, I hope this works out for you. And thank you for your kind compliment.
I also had this happen – twice! I exited the game and went back in and that seemed to resovlve the problem.
Hey thanks Tpitman, always helpful when readers share how they resolved the problem, especially to those other WWF players that are experiencing the same issue.
happens to me all the time also but if I do a hard restart on my phone, it usually takes care of the problem. Hope this helps…
Wow you guys are awesome! It’s great seeing readers helping one another.
just a glitch in the game. exit the game and reload it and everything should be fine.
