Beginner’s Guide to Words With Friends

New to Words With Friends? No problem! You’ve come to the right place. Words With Friends is a lot like Scrabble but way better, because you can play with your friends online, meaning you could even play from the comfort of your toilet seat, how’s that for a selling point, baazing!

But before you can play any game you need to know the rules, so let’s get to it.

Tile Placement

The first word of every game has to have at least one tile placed on the star square. Each new word formed must share at least one tile of a pre-existing word. Words can be formed horizontally (left to right) and vertically (top to bottom).

Scoring

Each letter has a set value, so for example D is worth two points, O is one point and G is three points. If you were to spell the word DOG you would earn a total of six points. There are also blank tiles, although they carry no point value they can become any letter you wish, making them very useful for completing words that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise.

There are also premium squares spread across the board — DL=Double Letter, TL=Triple Letter, DW=Double Word and TW=Triple Word.

Premium squares are highly sought after, they have the potential to multiply your score greatly. For example if you were to play the word AX, A is worth one point and X is 8 points, you’d only score a total of 9 points. But if the X was placed on the TL square, that would increase the value of X from 8 to 24 points, bringing you to the new total of 25 points.

If you use all 7 tiles in one turn you earn an extra 35 bonus points, this is called a bingo. Scoring bingos can adversely affect your opponent causing them to yell multiple CW=Cuss Words (not a premium square).

The game ends once a player has used up all their tiles, whatever tiles a player still possesses when the game ends will count against them and be awarded to the opposing player. For example, if your opponent beat you to the punch and played their last tiles before you could play your remaining tiles C, A and T — C being worth four points, A one point and T one point — you would subtract six points from your total score and add six points to your opponent’s score.

The game can also end if three turns have passed with no points scored.

Now that we have the basic rules out of the way, let’s dive into some basic strategies and tactics.

Strategy

There are many ways to play Words With Friends from a strategy stand point. Some players prefer a more aggressive approach, forming long words on each turn, to get rid of tiles as fast as possible. Keep in mind that 90 tiles are shared between both players, so the more tiles you use, the less there are for the opponent. Although it can be risky at times, branching out with long words gives your opponent ample opportunities to place tiles on premium squares.

The second approach I’d like to talk about is a more conservative style of play. It’s more defensive I’d say. With this approach you’ll form both short and long words, which of the two you’ll form on a given turn depends on a few factors, the biggest one being premium square proximity.

If you can form a long word to reach a premium square then go for it, otherwise, focus on forming short words. Make sure any word you form doesn’t extend so far that it allows your opponent to branch off your word to reach a premium square. Keep forming short words (especially parallel words, more on this later) until your opponent is forced to branch out putting you within striking distance of a premium square.

Obviously not all premium squares are of equal value, so you’ll have to use your best judgement on whether you want to avoid branching out to a certain premium square or if you’re willing to take the risk.

Tactics

Use Consonants to Minimize Risk – There are ways to minimize risk when forming long words. You’ll want to avoid placing vowels next to premium squares such as DL and TL. Placing vowels next to premium squares creates an easy setup for the opponent, since power tiles such as X naturally come before or after a vowel in many words. So just remember if possible form words with consonants next to the premium squares to minimize risk.

Avoid placing vowels next to premium squares.

Rack Management – Keeping a good balance of vowels and consonants on your rack is important. Having all vowels or consonants can make it difficult to form long words. If you do find yourself with too many of either kind, try using your opponent’s tiles to your advantage. Say for example you have all consonants, just look around the board for any vowels you can place two or more consonants next to. Or you could use the swap option to get rid of some consonants, this option forfeits your turn, use this option sparingly.

Be a Hooker – Hooking is when you add letters to the beginning or end of a word to form a new word. Hooks can be very potent, a well placed hook can really boost your score. Check out the screenshot below for example. I used the S to hook onto the word SINE to form the new word SINES, so far I’m at 6 points, then the new word I formed horizontally SLOGS is worth 36 points, since the L (2 points) was on the TL square and the S landed on the TW square, bringing me to the total of 42 points. In that example the word I hooked onto didn’t give that many extra points, but if you do see your opponent form a word containing lots of power tiles — such as K, J, Q, Z, and X — that would be the ideal time to become a hooker.

Counting Cards errr… Tiles – Now it may seem a bit extreme to keep track of what tiles have been played, but it’s actually very useful, I’ll give an example to illustrate why. If you were trying to reach the premium square TW by first spelling the word DOG vertically and then spelling the word SEA horizontally, where the S connects with DOG to form DOGS. In order for this tactic to work, you need to be sure that the opponent has no blank or S tiles to connect with the word DOG, making it impossible for them to use the TW tile against you. Letter distribution can be found at the end of the guide.

Bingo Stems – As the author of this guide, you may think I score bingos quite frequently, I assure you I do not. That actually makes me unqualified to write this next tip. But if you’re a big believer in the blind leading the blind, please by all means continue reading.

Bingo Stems are a group of six letters that give you the highest probability of forming a seven letter word. Try memorizing these bingo stems to improve your odds of scoring a bingo — TISANE, SATIRE and RETINA.

Parallel Words – I recommend memorizing as many two and three letter words as possible (word list at end of guide), this will allow you to form multiple words in a single turn. In the screenshot below we see the player form three words by placing them parallel to each other — PEE, PE and EL.

Have Fun

At the end of the day playing Words With Friends should be a fun experience, so don’t take the game too seriously. If you’re new, you’ll lose a lot, but don’t let it get to you, just hit the re-match button, form a word, then type in the chat box BRING IT! That’s usually how most of my games go, especially with my arch-rival Jenn K. Lee of Pocketables.net *Shakes Fist*. I hope you found this guide to be helpful, thank you for reading, and if you have any questions feel free to leave a comment.

Can you make 2 different words in a single play.. ex. I had the word CAPE horizontally on the board, my opponent spelled IS vertically to the left also spelling out SCAPE, but then in the same turn spelled THE vertically to the left of IS now spelling ESCAPE, THE, IS, and HI.. I understand you can add a letter to an existing word to make two words, but spelling two different words in the same turn doesn’t seem fair.. Is this allowed or is this a glitch

  5. Dye says:

The score in my last game was 355 (mine) to 272 (my opponent). I lost. How is that possible?

    • Ribeyerare says:

Likely you were playing ‘pass and play’ with someone in person. This seems to be a recurring glitch in this game mode. Rest assured, the rules clearly determine you to be the winner in that situation. Ive not heard of this glitch ever occurring while playing through the Internet server, only during pass and play.

Why are there so many unacceptable words? Examples: Christ, Jew(s), zoos, Panda, fag(s) (aka cigarette(s)), and other words I can’t remember right at the moment. I had a long word yesterday that was not accepted, but YETT is a word? I love the game but the dictionary needs an update. :-)

    • ribeyerare says:

a multitude of reasons. firstly, proper nouns are not acceptable. a proper noun is a word like Christ, or London. second, it seems many words considered derogatory or slanderous have also been removed from the game. this would be words like fag, or ass. yes these words have other meanings, but the developers opted to not include them anyway. thirdly, the game does not indicate what word is not accepted when playing multiple, parallel words, so i would conjecture that when you played zoos or panda you were inadvertently creating an illegal parallel word.
and lastly, there are literally tens and tens of thousands of words that should be accepted according to the official word list, ENABLE, but it seems that the developers left out many words probably because of the sheer enormity of the task of programming that dictionary into the game. imagine if you had to copy 173,000 words and all their conjugations and tenses into programming language!
the good news? the developers are constantly adding new words to the list so maybe there will be a day when you can play any word you can think of!
by the by, i forgot to mention, contractions are also illegal plays.
      hope this helps, angela!
      p.s.
i know jew is not a proper noun or a derogatory word, and it used to be a playable word in wwf! for some reason, about 6 or 7 months ago, the developers removed it from the list of legal words.dont ask me why cuz i dont know, and several people have commented here about it…..the world may never know….

      • blaqpearl says:

I have seen the Jew question asked several times also but the other day someone played Jews and it worked. I guess the developers forgot to take that one out.

        • Ribeyerare says:

Good to know, blaqpearl! But that gives us an idea of how overwhelming it is to manage all the words in the game. The developers clearly decided to disallow JEW as it was at one time an acceptable word in the game. I have played it myself! But interestingly enough, they allow JEWS!

      • Angela A says:

Thanks for explaining. I have since used ‘zoos’ successfully, but what was really confusing to me is that I spelled ‘Panda’ out on the board horizontally as a stand alone word. I probably misplaced my tiles. :-)

  9. KK says:

I don’t know how the points are added like on the example given on this screen shot:

Parallel Words – I recommend memorizing as many two and three letter words as possible (word list at end of guide), this will allow you to form multiple words in a single turn. In the screenshot below we see the player form three words by placing them parallel to each other — PEE, PE and EL.

The player got 22 points for forming the words: Pe, Pee, and El? I have managed to come up with 21?

    • Ribeyerare says:

I came up with 22…16 pts for the P, 2 pts for an E, 1 pt for the 2nd E, 1 pt for the E already on the board and 2 pts for the L. Check your math! Lol

I am looking for info on what happens when you use a blank tile on the star at the beginning of the game..
I was able to do this and form a 7 letter word and the opening move of my current game.
I noticed that for the next 2 or 3 rounds on my playing that the letters seemed to get replaced immediately when I pull them off my rack and put them on the board.
Was that a glitch or a bonus? I have not been able to find anything about it in any of the rule of the game I have found on the web.
It is a great game, and I am addicted…

    • Ribeyerare says:

Just a glitch. Also, I don’t know that it stems from your use of the blank, I’ve had this happen in many different situations. Notice those tiles get replaced when you draw from the bag, and you can’t select them whilst playing your word.

  12. nicole says:

okay, I’ve just tried to play the words “inert” and “invoice” and they are coming up as “not acceptable.” Are there reasons why this is, that I’m not thinking of?

  13. KJ says:

Is it cheating to look at the two and three letter list published here during a game?

  14. Maineak says:

Hi. You list hoy as a permitted word, yet it is not an English word. I don’t think it is commonly used in the English language. How does one determine if the word is acceptable? Is there a way to challenge words played, as there is in Scrabble? Does the game allow illegal words to be played? Thanks!

    • Ribeyerare says:

Sorry, no challenges. One thing about the game is it will not allow you to play an illegal word. If you try to, a message will pop up informing you the word is unacceptable and you get to try again, no forfeit of the turn. This is good and bad for many different reasons, but that’s another discussion.
The word list that the game uses is listed above, in ironcells wonderful introduction to the game. The problem is, there are tens of thousands of legal words and not all have actually been included by the developers. They are constantly adding more, however. Think of it as a work in progress!

  15. Gtrpicker says:

Is this correct? 102 letter tiles plus 2blanks with any 90 used in the pool for each game? Or only 90 used per game out of the standard pool containing all 104 tiles? This would mean 14 tiles remain unused in a completed game.

    • Gtrpicker says:

Here’s the conflict: at the initiation of the game both players have 7 tiles and the line below says 90 tiles remain. That’s 104 tiles. Later the line indicates 0 tiles left despite those remaining in the ” trays”. Explain.

      • Ribeyerare says:

This is very easy to explain. The ’tiles left’ refers to the tiles left in the ‘bag’ available for selection. It does not include tiles on the rack. The opponent will always have 7 tiles on their rack until the end of the game, when it becomes your responsibility to keep track of how many tiles they have remaining on their rack. This is easy to do. When the tiles left reaches 7, start counting how many tiles your opponent plays. If they play a bingo, there will be 7 tiles on their rack after the play and the line will say 0 tiles left. Another scenario, if it says 2 tiles left and your opponent plays a 5 letter word, they will only have 4 tiles on their rack and the line will say 0 tiles left. Understand?

  16. designgauge.com says:

Why is “QUA” accepted but not “QUO”? and why not “I’M”?

    • Ribeyerare says:

QUO is not a word. You are thinking of status quo which is short for quotient or quid pro quo which is not English. I’M is not an accepted word because it is a contraction and those types of words are illegal. Both of these words are also unacceptable in the board game scrabble, as well.
I always try and use a word in a sentence if I think it is a word that should be accepted. If I can’t do it, I figure it justifiably unacceptable. Try using the word QUO in a sentence….

      • Ribeyerare says:

I’m sorry, I should have added that abbreviations of words are illegal. That is why QUO won’t work. Generally, pronouns, foreign languages and contractions are all illegal plays…. However there are exceptions with foreign words when they are commonly used in English, such as qi or li or dejavu etc. (lol I know, I know, who the heck says qi?) also accepted is archaic and outdated words, and the spellings of letters of the alphabet. Only experience and study can prepare you to use these words, but with practice, you will find yourself using them quite often!

  17. Doxiekiss says:

Move the yes/no buttons away from the bottom of the page. Too easy to hit NO instead of the iPad function button after receiving an invite. Games were accidentally declined by me and my opponent.

    • Ribeyerare says:

Doxiekiss….this is a suggestion that you should send to the developers of the game. You can reach them through the contact us link on their website, or the AppStore, or through their Facebook page.
This forum is unaffiliated with newtoy, the developers of words with friends.

  18. rjohn68 says:

How come when u draw a blank tile it’s not worth any points? Shouldn’t it be worth what the original tile is worth?

    • Ribeyerare says:

Sorry. Blanks are always worth 0, their real benefit lies in being a “wild card” and giving an easier opportunity to score big points with a bingo or hook, or some other method.
Consider this, I will never play a blank tile unless I am scoring at least 30 points on the play. Using strategy, you make the WORD score you points, don’t rely on the BLANK TILE to do it for you!

  20. Trish says:

I like to play a game until the end…win or lose. So often people will resign a game if they’re likely to lose. Is there some benefit to resigning a game that I should know?

Also, I found the rematch button on the free game, but how do you request a rematch on the purchased version?

    • Ribeyerare says:

The only benefit to resigning Is that you end your impeding fate a little quicker, lol! Really though, an opponent resigning I’d the same as playing to the end. It is a legal move in the game to be used at the players discretion. Consider yourself fortunate…. Most of us have had games sit on our queues for weeks with no moves until they are auto resigned by the server! I would much prefer my deadbeat opponent just resign and not use up one of my 20 game slots!
As for the rematch button, well it’s in the same place as before! Lol! The only difference between the two version is that one costs money and one you have to look at ads everytime you input a move.

  21. Jules says:

Why was i forced to resign when I did not have a place for my last tile. My oppenent passed and I was forced to resign vs deducting my last tile. Whats up with that?

    • Matunos says:

I’m not sure why it forced to resign, but the game ends if there are 3 consecutive turns with no scoring (and the game isn’t 0-0). It’s hard to tell if that was your situation, but if you didn’t have a place for your last tile, it seems likely. In that case, though, whoever has the higher score should win.

Is there a way to be matched with opponents who are at my approximate skill level ? I don’t really want to be in a tournament, just want to play fairly equal games. I have several friends who are at my level and want to play – one beats me fairly regularly (that’s OK) others don’t want to play me any more because they get tired of losing. Or I have to take it easy on them so they will play again. Or they wait 2 weeks between plays and tie up the total number of games I can play. My average score runs around 350 – 450. I have tried random games with Newtoy but apparently that matches you with people who did not ask for a random game and most of them are not very skilled at the game.

    • Ricksells says:

If you are scoring 450, you are not playing someone at your caliber.
Would you like to play ?

      • Ribeyerare says:

Lol Rick that is so not true!
There are many approaches to the game, and a good player can not only score 450, but also slow the tempo down and play defensively if inclined. I have scored over 600 before, and I have also won games by only scoring in the low 200′s.
Experience teaches us that no matter how you excel at finding word anagrams, the luck of the draw may still dictate your fate in the game.

    • Ribeyerare says:

Don’t worry, I’m sure your opponent is not holding a grudge, lol!
This simply means there was an error on the server end and the game had to be dropped. I have often wondered but don’t know for sure, does your opponent also get a message saying they lost the game? This has happened to me many times, and sometimes I even have the higher score!

I just made the final move in a game. The score ended as a tie 345/345. Why did it say I lost? Is there no such thing as a tie in WWF?

    • Ribeyerare says:

As per the rules: “in the case of a tie, the player who had the highest score before the end of the game is the winner.”
You were losing and failed to take the lead with your final move, therefore you lost. It must have been a really good game, though!
